It was at Roger Tucker's 40th bash that several of
those present hatched the idea to organise a golf day, and so on a very wet September day in 1992, twelve ex
footballers from British Aerospace (Weybridge) FC played in the inaugural golf day at Guildford Golf
Club. It soon became clear that, with passing years, an increasing number
of
ex players would be throwing away their soccer boots in favour of a new
and
less physical challenge. Since the birth of the society in 1992, interest
has progressively grown to the extent that there are now two meetings in
the
year; an eighteen hole spring event (at Hartley Wintney) and the main
meeting - 27 holes at Sutton Green in late September. After three years at
Guildford, the society moved to Dummer (under the good stewardship of
Geoff Haddow) and since 1998 the autumn meeting has been hosted by Micky Reeve
at
Sutton Green. The venue works well with the course offering some
challenges
for the more seasoned campaigners whilst not discouraging the growing
number
of ex footballers that have only recently taken up the game. The usual
format for the day is an 18-hole stableford competition followed by a
9-hole
team event in the afternoon - and of course a meal in the evening. |
